In immunocompetent hosts, the viruses remain latent after primary infection. With few exceptions, illnesses associated with these viruses occur in times of immune compromise, especially in conditions that bring about … Primary infection with polyomavirus (particularly BK) occurs in childhood and is usually an asymptomatic infection or leads to mild upper respiratory infection. Afterward, the virus enters a latent phase within specific target cells including renal tubular epithelial cells. Polyomavirus infection of the urinary tract was first described in a renal transplant recipient almost 40 years ago, and subsequent studies have shown that polyomaviruses can be detected in up to 60% of renal transplant patients. 34 For more than 2 decades after the discovery of these viruses, they were occasionally associated with transient renal dysfunction or ureteral stenosis.

Author: Heidari, Shirin. Date: 2001-06-01. Polyomavirus infection of the kidney has not been described after lung transplantation . Indeed, the literature on polyomavirus infection in solid-organ recipients is largely limited to studies of renal recipients, and there are only a few case reports in nonrenal transplants .
Polyomaviruses (JC virus [JCV], BK virus [BKV], and simian virus 40 [SV40]) establish subclinical and persistent infections and share the capacity for reactivation from latency in their host under immunosuppression. Polyomavirus is a deadly infection that affects many of the bird's body parts and organs simultaneously. This infection affects caged birds, especially those from the parrot family. Young birds from newborn to juveniles (14-56 days), are the birds most at risk and is usually fatal. Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV or MCV) is a novel human polyomavirus that has been discovered in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a highly aggressive skin cancer.
